Human beings require attention from others. From birth through death, this

interdependence on others is a vital ingredient to both individual growth and success as

a species. When substance abuse issues and mental health problems intrude on

everyday life, isolation from significant others (loved ones, colleagues, systems) often

follows, and this, as we all are aware, has devastating effects.

Recovery from mental health issues and substance abuse depends on the fellowship of

other human beings. Healing mind, body, spirit, and community require human

engagement to be successful. Whether it is the fellowship of a mutual aid support

group, a spiritual community, a healthy family system, friendships, or a supportive

organization such as FLA, belonging brings the following benefits:

  • Knowledge that we are not alone with this. There are others who empathize with

what we are thinking and feeling and therefore can light the path toward a

positive solution. Isolation disappears.

  • With fellowship, we are held accountable and become more committed to the

solution, as opposed to remaining in the problem. Fear disappears.

  • Mentors or sponsors guide us toward the development of coping skills to address

our anger, stress, and defense mechanisms. Without this gentle “carefrontation,”

our behaviors do not change in any meaningful way. Loneliness disappears.

  • Fellowship provides support in times of significant distress. Self-pity disappears.

  • Fellowship promotes wellness and spiritual growth. Self-awareness cannot co-

exist with isolation. Self-condemnation disappears.

  • Fellowship provides the structure in which to develop a sense of community

which can then be passed on to others. Humility appears.

FLA promotes fellowship as a means to build a bridge to mental health awareness and

growth. Join us for one of our free and confidential support groups that foster growth,

awareness, and trust; all essentials for fellowship.
