Florida Lawyers Assistance  Workshop 2008

 

Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc. will hold its 22nd annual workshop on Friday and Saturday, July 25 -26, 2008 at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, 851 Gulf Shore Blvd. North, Naples, Florida 34102. Room cost at the hotel will be $120.00 per night (plus service and tax) for a standard room (ocean view rooms and suites are available at additional cost) and room sharing is available (please call FLA). Reservations should be made as soon as possible, but no later than June 24, 2008. Reservations can be made by calling the hotel at 800-237-7600 or by registering online at The Naples Beach Resort Hotel

The advance registration fee for the Workshop (by 7/10/08) is $145.00. Registration after that date is $165.00, and the guest fee is $60.00. Scholarships are available on an as needed basis, and written requests for scholarships must be e-mailed or faxed to FLA at mail@fla-lap.org or 954-568-0803.

1:10 -  2:00   MONITORING, MENTORING AND 12-STEP WORK .  Michael Cohen, Executive Director and Judith Rushlow, Esq., CAAP, Assistant Director, FLA .  A brief history of the evolution of FLA and the critical role of its volunteer network as viewed by FLA staff.  

2:00 - 2:50    A BROADER BRUSH: FLA's EXPANSION OF SERVICES TO ASSIST LAWYERS IN NEED.  Scott M. Weinstein, PhD., Clinical Director, FLA . A discussion of the clinical resources for lawyers with mental health conditions, including stress and burnout, with emphasis on the effectiveness of peer-assisted group therapy.

3:10 - 4:00   THE TRUTH: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND HOW.  John Palmatier, Ph.D., M.S., Polygraph Examiner and Credibility Consultant. An expert=s view on candor and credibility as it relates to the legal profession, criminal justice and substance abuse.  

4:00 - 4:50   LAWYER STRESS AND SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS.  Steven J. Pinkert, Esq., M.D., a practicing attorney, and Sherma Pinkert, LCSW, therapist and personal trainer. A candid look at the causes of stress, its impact among attorneys, and the importance of self-care in managing this problem.

6:15 - 8:00    DINNER and PROFESSIONALISM WORKSHOP:  Moderator: The Hon. Stanford Blake. Scenarios dealing with issues of professionalism will be distributed and discussed among the lawyers, judges and students at each table, with the conclusions presented by a designated member of each group.

10:20 - 11:00  THE VIEW FROM THE BENCH: JUDGES VIEW ON MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE.  The Hon. Stanford Blake, Moderator, The Hon. Deborah White-Labora, and The Hon. Steven Leifman. Judges from the 11th Circuit describe judicial systems dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues, and respond to questions from the audience.

11:00 - 11:50 12- STEP YOGA: STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR LAWYERS.   Julie W. Allison, Esq. and Elliot Silver, Esq. The use of universal spiritual principles and simple yoga postures to reduce anxiety, relax the body and quiet the mind.
